New Year

Take Risks

This devotional is written by Matt Coombs.
The Wild Goose

The Celtic term for the Holy Spirit was An Geadh-Glas, which translates as "the Wild Goose." The idea is this: just as a wild goose cannot be tamed and its movements cannot be predicted, so it is with the Holy Spirit. Pursuing his calling is much like engaging in an adventurous Wild Goose chase.

I wonder if you recognise that experience?

At New Year the resolutions we make are often resolutions to push ourselves beyond our norm.

A question.

Has your faith become tame?

We all have a choice to make. We can choose to stay in our safety, or we can chase the Wild Goose and experience the wonderful adventure God has in mind for us.

Discernment is a spiritual gift. It's often hard to work out what God is calling us too. However, we can hear his voice, and sometimes he leads us to extraordinary places.

When I look back at my life, I can see the prompting of the Spirit leading me to do things that didn't necessarily make sense at the time, but in hindsight I see God's grace and plan.

I can also see times where I wonder if had I acted, or responded to what God was saying to me how my life might be different.

Pursuing the leadership of the Holy Spirit can be very unsettling because we often don't have a clue where we're headed. However, as soon as we can accept this fact, we will enjoy the journey much more. The journey may not be safe or certain, but it is guaranteed to be far from boring.

If you want to make a ballsy resolution this year, commit to being open to God's leading. Learn to hear his voice and follow his untamed movements.

Is 2019 the year of risk taking for you?
