The Gospel of Luke

Luke

Jesus Predicts His Death a Third Time

31 Jesus took the Twelve aside and told them, "We are going up to Jerusalem, and everything that is written by the prophets about the Son of Man will be fulfilled. 32 He will be delivered over to the Gentiles. They will mock him, insult him and spit on him; 33 they will flog him and kill him. On the third day he will rise again."

34 The disciples did not understand any of this. Its meaning was hidden from them, and they did not know what he was talking about.

Reflection

Can you imagine knowing that you were going to be killed, in the most inhumane way
known to man and yet because of "love" you continued along that path? The love Jesus has
for us is such that I cannot even put it into words. Jesus did not flinch from following
through on His father's will, He knew what it would cost Him and yet being obedient to His
father was His sole focus because He trusted His Father implicitly.

God loves us utterly and completely. So much so that He did what was necessary to save us
by allowing His son to die for us.

Like the disciples I struggle to understand this Love. But just because I don't understand it
doesn't mean it isn't real, it doesn't mean it isn't available, it doesn't mean I can't
experience it and give it away.

In these days we just have to trust that God's love endures forever, that nothing separates
us from His love, and that His love is unfailing.

When we read this passage we have the benefit of hindsight. We know that "Everything
that was written by the prophets about Jesus was fulfilled". Not only that – We know Jesus
rose from the dead. This should give us confidence that Jesus will come again.

I think sometimes we can forget this truth but it is a truth that completes my faith. Jesus is
returning one day and when He comes again we will be completely free of pain and trouble.

Until then keep asking God for His unfailing love to be real for us each day.

Prayer

Lord, Fill us with your love to comfort, to reassure and encourage us. Fill us with your Spirit
so that through us your love will shine to all those around us. Amen.
