Salt and Light

This devotional is written by Christian Dixon. Christian is a primary school teacher and has been part of St Mary's for two years! He randomly decided to take up K-Pop dance lessons this summer and actually found out he quite enjoyed it!

Matthew 5:13-16

Salt and light

13 'You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled underfoot.

14 'You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. 15 Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. 16 In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.

Reflection

Being somewhat introverted, it takes me a while to relax around people and show them my true self. When I do eventually relax and feel confident to show more of who I am, I'm generally much more fun to be around! I'm sure my friends can vouch for me here! We all have reasons for why we might hide a part of who we are, fear of what others might think of us, fear of disapproval or even embarrassment. Be assured today of Gods full acceptance of you, he is not ashamed of you but rejoices in you. You are his prized possession. God doesn't want us to hide under a lampshade, he wants you on show, he's like a proud parent at a school production. Even if you fumble your lines, he'd still be whooping and cheering you on. When we share a bit more of who we are with a friend, such as our interests, our likes and dislikes, our random hobbies, our pet peeves, we open ourselves up and form a connection with that person. Showing our true selves is similar to the image of salt which is often used to enhance flavour. It makes us more interesting to be around! Likewise, being open about our faith in Jesus can be a way of showing who we are to others. In fact, I'm sure many of us would agree that having a relationship with Jesus is the best part! The most flavoursome, the most exciting, the most exhilarating and most life changing part of our life!
