John 8:12

Dispute over Jesus' testimony

12 When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, 'I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.'

Reflection

This is the second of seven "I am" declarations of Jesus in the gospel of John that shows us His divine identity and purpose.

Today more than ever, we need more of God's Light because darkness has come into the world, and it is so real, and it hurts. -The Covid 19 pandemic, -The Killing of George Floyd and the murder of Sarah Everard, The sexual abuse in Schools, The countless teenager stabbings, Poverty, and the rising mental health problems in our communities.

Jesus is claiming that he is the light of the world and that coming to know him is like having a light switched on in a dark place so you can see the way clearly.

In Uganda, where I grew up, electric power cuts would happen at least thrice a week and if it happened late in the evenings, the Darkness would be real and scary but a small light eg. from a torch or a lantern would extinguish that darkness and it brought such a big relief.

In Jn 1:4, the scriptures tell us that in him was life and that life was the light of men. This Light shines in the darkness, but darkness and evil cannot comprehend it. Jesus ultimately dealt with the darkness of our world at the cross. At the Cross he defeated evil and suffering, The Cross shows us the light of the world bearing this darkness on our part. At the cross, He came into the world he created, and his light was exchanged for our darkness!

Christ is the Word of the invisible God, who created light and life when the earth was spoken into being. He clothed Himself in human flesh, so that mankind could be redeemed, by faith in Him. Hence all our wrong doings, the violations we've suffered, the consequences of the decisions we made, and all our filthiness went to Jesus at calvary. Jesus draws us closer in an extraordinary act of love, offering us forgiveness, the light of life in contrast to our darkness and he promises to be with us.
